WAN Acceleration
WAN optimization appliances increase the efficiency of data transmitted between sites over the wide area network. TCP is a “chatty” protocol that requires a lot of overhead. Often TCP has problems in long distance communication and requires data to be retransmitted. WAN optimization appliances remove “static” from the WAN connection, thus making transmission more efficient and almost removing the need to retransmit data.

Also, companies underutilize their bandwidth and ISPs often oversubscribe bandwidth to their customers, typically only 25 to 30 percent of the “actual” bandwidth between sites is being used. WAN optimization appliances take full advantage of the “actual” bandwidth and utilize up to 98 percent of the connection. The efficiency of WAN optimization can be especially useful in a disaster recovery scenario by restoring data from the remote site back to the original site much faster.
