Siafu Sypher Tape

Encryption Appliances

Sypher™ Series
Protect your tapes from accidental or deliberate loss of data
The major benefit of tape is portability which may also be a huge security challenge if unencrypted backup tapes fall into the wrong hands. The Siafu Sypher Tape Encryption Appliance allows you to securely encrypt tapes destined for office locations.

Secure Sensitive Information on Tape with Strong Encryption
Siafu Sypher Encryption Appliance are the tools storage managers need to comply with the Data Accountability Act, California SB 1386, the Identity Theft Protection Act and the Personal Data Privacy and Security Act to protect your sensitive data on tape with 256 bit AES Encryption.

Simple and Secure Automated Key Management

Encryption key management is a new challenge for today's IT environments. Lose a key and you lose the ability to decrypt your valuable and sensitive data. Sypher generates and stores all keys. All Sypher keys are encrypted and protected. Only a key alias remains on tapes and Sypher insures the encrypted key is available when a tape requires a key.

Siafu Sypher Benefits vs. Backup Software
Most tape vendors supply encryption as a standard feature with their backup software. Utilizing backup software encryption may have numerous hidden costs.
  • Backup software encryption causes high CPU utilization on your backup server. High CPU utilization will cause your backup software to run longer and reduce your valuable backup window
  • Tape Drive Compression may be lost when using backup software. Compression must be performed first before encryption. To be successful, compression requires your data to be in a non-random format. Encryptions main goal is to randomize your data. If you send encrypted data to a compressible tape drive the data may actually grow on tape.
  • The loss of compression may require the purchase and management of additional tape cartridges.
  • Backup software traditionally allows one key per environment. The Sypher Encryption Appliance allows one key per tape.

Sypher Virtual Encryption Tape Format
Sypher tape encryption may be utilized in two modes. The first mode is basic backup software encryption. Sypher encrypts the backup software tape format as it is written to tape. All tape attributes and backup data are encrypted and written natively to the tape. Sypher Virtual Encrypted Tape Format is a new tape format designed for additional security. While encrypting, all tape attributes and tape backup software formats are removed from the tape and replaced with Sypher Virtual Encrypted Tape Format. This new format extends the encryption key size and adds additional protection to the tape from prying eyes.
